The Brutalist
After escaping the turmoil of post-war Europe, visionary architect László Toth begins anew in America, determined to rebuild his life, his work, and his fractured marriage to his wife Erzsébet. During the war, shifting borders and changing regimes had torn them apart, but László is resolute in reuniting with her as he navigates this unfamiliar land.
Arriving in Pennsylvania, László faces the daunting task of starting over in a foreign country. It’s here that he catches the eye of Harrison Lee Van Buren, a wealthy and influential industrialist who recognizes László's extraordinary talent for architectural design. Under Van Buren’s mentorship, László embarks on a journey to construct monumental buildings that promise to define the future of American architecture.
However, as László's career flourishes under Van Buren’s patronage, he begins to understand the steep price of power and legacy. The world of wealth and influence is not as glamorous as it appears, and he soon faces difficult choices that test his morals and ambitions. The opportunity to build a lasting legacy comes with personal sacrifices, and László finds himself torn between his professional dreams and his desire to reconcile with his wife, Erzsébet, who remains far away in Europe.
The tension between his burgeoning success and the isolation from his past weighs heavily on László. As he navigates a complex web of social expectations and corporate alliances, he grapples with the impact of his work on both his personal and professional life. Each triumph in his architectural career seems to bring with it new challenges, leaving László questioning what is truly worth sacrificing in the pursuit of greatness.
