Disfluency
Jane had dreamed of her college graduation moment ever since she started university. However, that dream crumbled when she failed her last class, forcing her to return home to her parents’ lakeside cabin. More than just an academic setback, this failure was a reflection of something much deeper: an unresolved emotional wound that had followed her throughout her final year of studies.
Back in the house where she had spent so many childhood summers, Jane faced a mix of nostalgia and pain. The sound of the waves lapping against the shore, the creaking of the old dock beneath her feet, and the scent of pine trees should have brought her peace, but instead, they awakened confusing memories of a trauma she had tried to bury.
Her last year at university had been a constant struggle. Her friends saw her as distant, her professors noticed her lack of focus, and academic responsibilities became an unbearable burden. Yet Jane couldn’t fully explain what was affecting her. There was something in her memory, a troubling void she couldn’t fill with words.
In the solitude of the lake, she begins to piece together what happened. Through old journal entries, forgotten conversations, and reconnecting with her surroundings, the fragments of her past start to make sense. The anxiety she felt in the classroom, the persistent insomnia, and the sensation of being trapped in her own mind were signs of something she had tried to ignore.
But the healing process isn’t easy. There are days when she feels stuck in a cycle of guilt and frustration, questioning whether she will ever be able to move forward. However, with each sunset reflected on the water and every deep breath of fresh air, she finds small doses of clarity.
