The Silent Twins (2022) is a powerful biographical drama based on the true story of June and Jennifer Gibbons, identical twins from the only Black family in a small Welsh town during the 1970s and 1980s. From a young age, the sisters feel rejected and alienated by their community, which leads them to form an unbreakable bond with each other. Isolated from the outside world, they communicate only between themselves, retreating into a rich inner world of imagination, storytelling, and adolescent longing.
The film delves into how their creative connection gradually turns into a form of psychological imprisonment. Their behavior becomes increasingly erratic, culminating in a series of petty crimes that land them in Broadmoor, a high-security psychiatric hospital. There, they are faced with a heartbreaking choice: separate and survive—or stay together and risk everything.
Directed by Agnieszka Smoczyńska and written by Andrea Seigel, The Silent Twins (2022) is a visually and emotionally compelling exploration of sisterhood, mental health, and social exclusion. The film weaves poetic imagery and surreal animation to bring the girls’ fantastical inner world to life, offering viewers a unique lens into their shared mindscape.
