In the magical and complex world of Oz, long before Dorothy arrived with her tornado, a deeply human story of friendship, prejudice, and destiny begins to unfold. Wicked takes us back to the formative years of two of the most iconic characters in the Oz universe: Glinda, the future Good Witch of the North, and Elphaba, the woman whom official history would ultimately label as the Wicked Witch of the West.
Elphaba is born with a distinctive green skin color that makes her a target of fear, rejection, and ridicule from an early age. Marked by her difference, her sharp intellect, and a strong sense of justice, she is sent to Shiz University, a prestigious magical institution. There, by a twist of fate, she ends up sharing a room with Glinda, a blonde, charismatic young woman of noble lineage, whose popularity starkly contrasts with Elphaba’s social exclusion.
At first, their differences seem irreconcilable. Glinda mocks Elphaba’s appearance, while Elphaba scorns her roommate’s superficiality and selfishness. However, as they spend more time together, an unexpected and sincere friendship begins to blossom. The two young women discover allies in one another, even as their paths and beliefs start to diverge.
