In 1970s Australia, Grace's life is plagued by misfortune and loss. After their mother dies during pregnancy, Grace and her twin brother, Gilbert, are raised by their father, Percy, a former juggler who is now both paraplegic and an alcoholic. Despite the challenges they face, the siblings experience a life full of love. However, tragedy strikes once again when Percy dies unexpectedly in his sleep. This loss forces Grace and Gilbert to be separated and placed in different homes, shattering their bond and leaving them to navigate the world alone.
