Riley is a young girl who, like any human being, lives her daily life guided by a variety of emotions. Although Joy has been the dominant emotion throughout most of her childhood, her inner world is far from simple. In her mind, other equally important emotions coexist: Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger. Together, these emotions form a team that works tirelessly to help her face life’s challenges. However, there is one emotion Riley doesn’t quite understand: Sadness.
To her, sadness feels uncomfortable, annoying, and seemingly pointless. Why should there be an emotion that makes her feel vulnerable or weak? This question becomes especially relevant when her life takes an unexpected turn: her family moves to a new city, which means a new house, a new school, and new friends. This process of adaptation puts Riley’s emotional balance to the test, and for the first time, Joy is no longer enough to keep her inner world stable.
In the midst of this emotional crisis, an accident occurs in “Headquarters” — the place where Riley’s feelings are managed — that separates Joy and Sadness from the rest of the emotions. The two are forced to embark on a journey through the deepest parts of Riley’s mind: from the realm of Imagination to the labyrinths of Long-Term Memory. Together, they must find their way back before Riley becomes completely disconnected from herself.
