Goldfish
Anamika returns to her home after a long absence, a return marked by sadness and uncertainty. Daughter of a mixed marriage, she has spent years away from her mother, Sadhana, who now faces the first signs of dementia. Over time, the connection between mother and daughter has faded, not only due to physical distance but also because of Sadhana’s deteriorating memory, which often leaves her unable to recognize even her own daughter.
Anamika’s return to the house she once knew as home is not just a physical return, but an emotional journey into a past that has blurred in her memory. The neighborhood she returns to is a place that no longer feels familiar, and the woman she expects to find, her mother, is marked by illness, unable to recall important details of her life or her daughter’s life.
The contrast between what was and what is defines this story: a scenario where a mother’s love for her daughter seems more like a memory than a tangible reality. Yet, Anamika’s love for her mother remains intact, even when the woman before her seems like a stranger, someone who no longer sees her with the same eyes. Anamika’s anguish over the loss of the woman who was her mother blends with the hope that some part of the Sadhana she once knew still remains, even if in fragments lost in the fog of dementia.
