In the final years of the 19th century, Japan was undergoing a profound and violent transformation. The Meiji Restoration marked the collapse of the Tokugawa shogunate and the birth of a new imperial order. In this turbulent historical context, the Boshin War (1868–1869) breaks out—a civil conflict that pits supporters of the Emperor against forces loyal to the old regime. Amid the chaos, a story as unexpected as it is powerful emerges: a group of death row prisoners is given one last chance at redemption—on the battlefield.

This tale follows a small group of inmates, criminals from diverse backgrounds and troubled pasts, who are pulled from their cells to carry out a desperate mission. Their task: to defend a key fortress from the imperial troops advancing with unstoppable force. Lacking formal training and haunted by their own demons, the condemned soon discover that their lives—deemed expendable by the government—might be the last line of defense for the region.
