Synopsis
Inspired by true events, this powerful cinematic production transports us to the Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful and well-organized nations in West Africa during the 18th and 19th centuries. This story not only recovers a little-known chapter of African history but also pays tribute to the courage, leadership, and resilience of women who defied the norms of their time.
The narrative centers on Nanisca, masterfully portrayed by Viola Davis, a formidable general who leads with strength and wisdom an all-female military unit. These warriors, known as the Agojie, were the elite force of the kingdom and were distinguished by their discipline, bravery, and unwavering dedication to duty. At her side is Nawi, played by Thuso Mbedu, a bold and ambitious young recruit seeking to prove her worth and find her place in a world where war, politics, and betrayal are constant threats.
The film explores the evolving bond between these two women as they confront external enemies who not only threaten to invade Dahomey’s territory but also pose a direct threat to their culture, their freedom, and their identity. These enemies violated their honor, enslaved their people, and jeopardized everything the Agojie had fought for over generations.
